“Immediate support for Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza: the Commission will ensure the continuity of a center of excellence in the fields of medicine, surgery, and scientific research”.
General Director Gino Gumirato explains the role of the new "Steering and Supervisory Commission," of which he will serve as a member of the Technical Committee.
"On May 27, the Holy Father decided to establish a Steering and Supervisory Commission for the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Foundation. Many people, as well as many journalists, have asked us whether this amounts to a receivership. Obviously, it is not a receivership; it is a 'Steering and Supervisory Commission,' similar to those established by many governments when overseeing state-owned or publicly controlled companies.
We will have proof of this fairly soon. By the end of June, the Foundation will approve the financial statements as of December 31, 2025, and with the approval of the accounts, the current appointments will also expire, making it necessary to appoint a new Board of Directors and a new General Director. On that occasion, we will be able to assess in practice the effects of this new Commission.
Many have also pointed out the concentration of powers within the Commission and the fact that it has been entrusted with very broad authority. That is true, but if there is a desire to provide immediate support to our Foundation and our Hospital, then it is right that there should be speed, efficiency, and effectiveness in decision-making.
As for the composition of the Commission, we can see that it includes the highest-ranking officials of the Vatican's economic and patrimonial institutions. These are all people with whom we have worked very closely over the years and with whom we share a relationship of esteem and friendship, while fully respecting each institution's role.
Ultimately, the Commission's task will be to ensure the continuity of our hospital as a center of excellence in medicine, surgery, and scientific research, and in doing so it can only be inspired by the values of its holy founder, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina."
