From 1993 to 1995, he headed the Neuropharmacology Unit at the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute in Milan. From 1996 to 1999, he served as Deputy Scientific Director at Neurospheres Ltd in Calgary, focusing on neural transplantation research. Upon completing this role, he returned to Italy to serve as Co-Scientific Director at the Stem Cell Research Institute at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, a position he held until 2006. Since then, he has been a professor of cell biology at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Currently, he is the Scientific Director of the Human Brain Stem Cell Bank and the Nanomedicine Center at Niguarda Hospital in Milan, where he also serves as a Founder. Since January 2010, he has been the Scientific Director of the IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza in San Giovanni Rotondo and the G. Mendel Institute of Human Genetics in Rome.

Since 2008, he has served as Associate Professor of Neurology at Houston Methodist Hospital. Prof. Angelo Vescovi is actively engaged in developing clinical applications of human neural stem cells for the treatment of neurological disorders. He pioneered the concept of intravenous neural stem cell implantation for multiple sclerosis. Recently, his research team identified cancer stem cells in human malignant gliomas and proposed an innovative biotherapeutic approach for treating human malignant tumors. In clinical research, he designed, sponsored, and served as the principal investigator for the world’s first Phase 1 clinical trials focused on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), completed in 2016, and Multiple Sclerosis, completed in 2021. Both trials utilized intracerebral implantation of human neural stem cells. He also led an international study on the intratumoral use of BMP4 protein in recurrent glioblastomas, which concluded in 2021. Prof. Vescovi is the founder and Scientific Director of two biotechnology companies: StemGen Inc. (Milan, Italy) and HyperStem SA (Lugano, Switzerland), both specializing in brain cancer therapies. He also founded Nanomed 3D Inc. (Milan, Italy), a company dedicated to manufacturing brain prosthetics for severe central nervous system injuries. Among his numerous roles, Prof. Vescovi has served as a scientific advisor to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Vatican City, the Stem Cell Commission of the House of Lords in England, and the European Commission. His contributions have been recognized with numerous national and international awards for his groundbreaking achievements in the scientific field. He is a member of the advisory boards for Children Neurobiological Solutions, CELMED (Quebec, Canada), Neurogeneration (California, USA), and CureScience (Santa Monica, California, USA). He has also provided his expertise as a reviewer for various esteemed international organizations, including the March of Dimes (USA), the Wellcome Trust (UK), the Royal Academy of Sciences (Sweden), the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany), and the European Science Foundation. In 2002, he established Revert Onlus, a nonprofit organization based in Milan, to support experimental therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. He has been an invited speaker at prestigious venues, including the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Pio Manzù Foundation Forum, and the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, and other prominent international institutions. Prof. Vescovi has authored over 180 peer-reviewed articles in leading scientific journals, such as Science, Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Reviews Cancer, Cancer Cell, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He has also served as a reviewer for national and international funding bodies, including the National Stem Cell Commissions of Italy, Ireland, and Austria. Most recently, Pope Francis appointed him as an Ordinary Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life.
