The Geriatrics and Gerontology Research Unit, in close collaboration with the clinical department, is dedicated to studying the molecular mechanisms underlying frailty across its various domains. The goal is to identify potential biomarkers that are diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive of this condition. Particular areas of interest include neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), as well as sarcopenia and atherosclerosis.
The Unit also conducts pharmacogenetic studies focused on the elderly population, aiming to optimize pharmacological therapies, reduce the risk of adverse drug reactions, and improve clinical outcomes.
Furthermore, the Unit is actively involved in technology-assisted care projects for frail older adults. These initiatives, carried out in collaboration with other research institutions, leverage robotic and multisensory platforms to enhance care and support for this vulnerable population.
