The Fondazione Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health as a multidisciplinary Research Hospital in the areas of Diagnostics, Neurology, and Oncology.
Its scientific activity develops around four main research lines outlined in the Italian Research Hospitals 2025-2027 Three-Year Plan:
1. Pathogenetic mechanisms and therapies for rare and neurodegenerative neurological diseases (Neurology);
2. Etiopathogenetic mechanisms of non-neurological rare diseases and complex diseases (Diagnostics);
3. Pathogenetic mechanisms, prediction, and personalized therapy for cancer (Oncology);
4. Regenerative medicine and advanced therapies (Neurology).
More than 150 professionals — including physicians, biologists, biotechnologists, bioinformaticians, biostatisticians, pharmacists, chemists, physicists, and engineers — work daily in the research sector, supported by biomedical laboratory technicians, clinical research coordinators, data entry specialists, and research nurses.
The researchers publish approximately 300 articles per year in prestigious international journals, including Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature Genetics. They also participate, as Principal Investigators or partners, in projects in the fields of biomedicine, ICT, and robotics funded by the European Union as well as by national public or private non-profit organizations.
The research laboratories of the Hospital, covering approximately 8,700 m², are equipped for advanced genomics, post-genomics, advanced therapies, and regenerative medicine studies. The research activities take place within the "Giovanni Paolo II" Polyclinic, the ISBReMIT Research Center (Institute for Stem Cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine, and Innovative Therapies) -which hosts GMP laboratories for the production of cell therapies and the synthesis of biopolymers, as well as animal facilities for in vivo studies (mice and rats)-, and the laboratories of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza – Mendel Institute in Rome.
A Grant Office, a Clinical Trial Office, and a Phase 1 Clinical Unit, all located inside the Scientific Research Department administrative offices, support the researchers in their activities.
