Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology is a specialized field of physiology that examines the electrical activities of the body in normal physiological states as well as under the influence of external electrical stimuli.

Catheter Ablation and Electrophysiological Study

This invasive procedure is designed to investigate and, when appropriate and feasible, eliminate the foci or accessory pathways responsible for arrhythmias. The electrophysiology lab performs approximately 160 such procedures annually.

Cardiac Device Implantation

The implantation of devices includes those for treating bradyarrhythmias (pacemakers), ventricular arrhythmias (implantable cardioverter defibrillators), advanced heart failure (cardiac resynchronization therapy devices), and syncope diagnosis (loop recorders). The electrophysiology lab performs an average of 370 device implantations (PM/AICD/CRT/loop recorders) annually.

Lead Extraction

The removal of malfunctioning cardiac leads is performed using laser-assisted techniques. The electrophysiology lab conducts approximately 15 lead extraction procedures per year.

External Electrical Cardioversion

This procedure interrupts cardiac arrhythmias by delivering an electrical shock to the chest under sedation. The electrophysiology lab performs approximately 50 cardioversion procedures annually.

Arrhythmology Outpatient Clinic

The D.S.O.U. for Arrhythmology operates a dedicated outpatient clinic focused on the clinical assessment of arrhythmias and the electronic monitoring of implanted cardiac devices. The clinic conducts approximately 1,500 device checks annually and manages a patient population of around 6,000.

Remote Monitoring of Implanted Devices (Home Monitoring)

The D.S.O.U. for Arrhythmology oversees approximately 300 patients equipped with implanted electronic devices through home monitoring, enabling real-time remote monitoring from the patient’s home.
