Internal Medicine

The Complex Operative Unit (COU) of Internal Medicine is located on the second floor of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Monumental Building.

The unit is organized into two distinct sections:

Medicine I: Focused on Immuno-Rheumatology and Cardiovascular Medicine
Medicine II: Specializing in Metabolic, Hepatological, and Pulmonological Internal Medicine, as well as Emergency Medicine

The COU also provides non-invasive and minimally invasive diagnostics using ultrasound guidance.

It is structured into clearly defined functional areas supported by specialized clinical expertise:

Cardiovascular Area

Immuno-Rheumatology Unit (DOU)

Ha It aims to diagnose and treat systemic inflammatory and autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

Particular attention is given to highly complex conditions (e.g., systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus), rare diseases (including Behçet's disease and autoinflammatory syndromes), and primary arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and seronegative spondyloarthritis.

Emergency Medicine Area

This area complements the COU’s inpatient care, aiming to optimize the management of patients with acute internal medicine conditions, especially those in clinical instability or referred from the Emergency Department or Short-Stay Observation Unit (OBI).

Metabolic-Hepatological Internal Medicine Area

This area focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of complex metabolic disorders and liver diseases, including: Complicated diabetes mellitus, Metabolic syndrome with associated comorbidities, Liver diseases, particularly metabolic liver disorders, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), conditions that have shown a marked increase in prevalence in recent years.
