Anatomical and Pathological Histology

The Complex Operative Unit (C.O.U.) of Pathological Anatomy is organized into dedicated sections for histopathology, cytopathology, immunocytochemistry, and molecular pathology.

Particular emphasis is placed on the classification of tumor histotypes and the molecular characterization of neoplasms to evaluate prognostic and predictive factors, including cases referred from other facilities for consultation.

Report turnaround times depend on the type of examination and the clinical priority level. Cytological and histological reports for symptomatic or rapidly progressing oncological pathologies are typically issued within three business days.

The unit's Medical Directors actively participate in Multidisciplinary Oncological Groups, where professionals from various specialties collaborate to ensure patients benefit from the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic standards available.

· At the C.O.U. of Pathological Anatomy, traditional histopathology is integrated with advanced molecular biology techniques, including in situ hybridization (CISH/FISH), real-time PCR, and next-generation sequencing (NGS).

· The clinical tests conducted at Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza enable the molecular profiling of various neoplasms to identify their prognostic and predictive biological factors.

· Within oncological pathology, particular emphasis is placed on identifying predictive factors for response to immunotherapy.

· Multidisciplinary Oncological Groups (GOM) are collaborative teams composed of various specialists (e.g., pathologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, etc.) who jointly define the diagnostic and therapeutic pathways for oncology patients.

· Outpatients or external users may contact our Operative Unit to request a second opinion on cytological or histological specimens prepared at other facilities, to obtain additional diagnostic information and/or perform molecular analyses of prognostic-predictive factors related to oncology.

Annual Activity Metrics: 20,000 histological examinations; 800 intraoperative examinations ; 4,000 cytological examinations.

· Validation of the Alliance Against Cancer lung panel in patients with non-small cell lung cancer

· Development of a prognostic algorithm for patients with locally advanced resectable non-small cell lung cancer
